“Holomua”
The word, holomua, means “to move forward into the future” and the students at the school call themselves the Voyagers. Holomua, the sculpture, is a bold expression of this as an interactive experience created so that the students can walk up into the hull as it is breaching a wave giving them a sense of their own voyage riding the prow of an ancient Hawaiian double hulled canoe. Holomua, the school, is, in a sense, that canoe, a vessel that helps them prepare for their greater voyage through life.
Commissioned by the Hawaii SFCA for Holomua Elementary School in Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
